PASTOR'S PICK'S:

  1. The Cross and Christian Ministry by D.A. Carson

Is the cross truly the center of your ministry? What can a first-century view of the cross teach us about Christian leadership? Plenty, says this respected New Testament scholar. Today we commonly see images of the cross adorning churches, dangling from necklaces, and gleaming from lapels. Yet the image that is so sanitized for us today was grotesque and abhorrent to those living in the first century. It was a symbol of evil, torture, and shame. It is this realistic and horrifying view of the cross that should call us to Christian ministry and compel us to share the Good News of Christ's triumph over death. In his thorough exposition of 1 Corinthians, Carson explores factionalism, servant-leadership, shaping "world" Christians, and the source of knowledge in order to help Christian leaders learn principles for dynamic, cross-centered worship. Carson therefore presents a comprehensive view of what the death of Christ means in preaching and ministering to God's people. Essentially, this exposition will help you gain a better understanding of what the death of Christ means in ministering to God's people.

  1. Power Through Prayer by E.M. Bounds

Pastor and civil war chaplain E. M. Bounds penned his slim classic on prayer for the simple reason that Christians don't pray enough. "The little estimate we put on prayer is evident from the little time we give to it," he wrote. "Talking to men for God is a great thing, but talking to God for men is greater still."  Bounds considered conversation with God as foundational to the Christian's life as breathing. He devoted the last 17 years of his life to intense intercession and to penning some of the most powerful and popular works on prayer.

Indeed, there is power through prayer! For many Christians, prayer is nothing special, just something we're supposed to do- go to church, tithe, read the Bible, pray. But prayer should be so much more than an item on our "to do" lists. With this time-tested manual for powerful prayer, you will: discover how effective prayers can transform you into a dynamic Christian, gain a deeper understanding of God's Word, experience personal and direct communication with God like never before, and know the fullness of divine power. This concise volume can help all Christians rediscover the source of spiritual power in their life.

  1. Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem

The Christian church has a long tradition of systematic theology, that is, studying theology and doctrine organized around fairly standard categories such as the Word of God, redemption, and Jesus Christ. This introductory textbook on systematic theology has several distinctive features:

  • A strong emphasis on the scriptural basis for each doctrine and teaching
  • Clear writing, with technical terms kept to a minimum
  • A contemporary approach, treating subjects of special interest to the church today
  • A friendly tone, appealing to the emotions and the spirit as well as the intellect
  • Frequent application to life
  • Resources for worship with each chapter
  • Bibliographies with each chapter that cross-reference subjects to a wide range of other systematic theologies

  1. Bible Doctrine by Wayne Grudem

How do we know the Bible is God's Word? What is sin and where did it come from? How is Jesus fully God and fully man? What are spiritual gifts? When and how will Christ return? If you've asked questions like these, then "systematic theology" is no abstract term. It's an approach to finding answers every Christian needs to know.

Abridged from Grudem's Systematic Theology and made accessible to the average reader, Bible Doctrine covers the same essentials of the faith, giving you a firm grasp on seven key topics:

  • The Doctrine of the Word of God
  • The Doctrine of God
  • The Doctrine of Man
  • The Doctrine of Christ
  • The Doctrine of the Application of Redemption
  • The Doctrine of the Church
  • The Doctrine of the Future

Like Systematic Theology, this book is marked by its clarity, its strong scriptural emphasis, its thoroughness in scope and detail, and its treatment of such timely topics as spiritual warfare and the gifts of the Spirit. But you don't need to have had several years of Bible school to reap the full benefits of Bible Doctrine. It's easy to understand---and it's packed with solid, biblical answers to your most important questions.

  1. Humility: True Greatness by C.J. Mahaney

God clearly states that he is drawn to the humble. He's also clear that He opposes the proud. These two, humility and pride, cannot coexist. Where one is fostered, the other is defeated.

Which will you pursue? C.J. Mahaney paints a striking picture of the daily battle quietly raging within every Christian and asks whether you will passively accommodate the enemy of your soul, pride, or actively cultivate your best friend, humility. It's the clash between our sense of stubborn self-sufficiency and God's call to recognize that we're really nothing without Him. It's pride versus humility. And it's a fight we can't win without looking repeatedly to Christ and the cross.  When you acknowledge the deception of pride and intentionally humble yourself, you become free to savor abundant mercies and unlikely graces. You will find a new life is yours - a life God richly favors. A God-glorifying life you don't want to miss.

C. J. Mahaney raises a battle cry to daily, diligently, and deliberately weaken our greatest enemy (pride) and cultivate our greatest friend (humility). His thorough examination clarifies misconceptions, revealing the truth about why God detests pride and turns His active attention to the humble. Because pride is never passive, defeating it demands an intentional attack. The blessing that follows is God's abundant favor. Humility: True Greatness, is an amazing challenge to believers to think seriously about how much weight God has placed on humility.

  1. Humility by Andrew Murray

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up" (James 4:10). Is your walk with God stale? Are the same old things just not working as you seek intimacy and God's power for you life? When Jesus "made himself nothing ... taking the nature of a servant," He modeled for all believers true humility. Murray calls this "our true nobility" and "the distinguishing feature of discipleship." In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ's life, underscoring the utmost need for humility---as opposed to pride---in the Christian's life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace.

Often called the best work on humility ever written, in this work you will find refreshment for your spiritual journey and learn that humble dependence on God is the basis of all genuine blessing. You will learn to model your life after Jesus' life, discover the secret of dying to self and living for God, find joy in service, invigorate your prayers, add power to your witnessing, bring your focus back to God, and walk in His will as never before! "By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life" (Proverbs 22:4).

  1. God’s Big Picture by Vaughan Roberts

Does the Bible sometimes seem like a confusing jumble of books, authors, and stories? With this encouraging tool guiding you, you'll be reading God's Word with new confidence and understanding.

  1. Gospel Primer by Milton Vincent

God did not give us His gospel just so we could embrace it and be converted. He offers it to us every day as a gift that keeps on giving us everything we need for life and godliness. To the Christians in Rome, the Apostle Paul wrote, "I am eager to preach the gospel to you who are at Rome" (Romans 1:15). Evidently, Christians need to hear the gospel even after conversion. A Gospel Primer for Christians is designed to do just that. Use this book to preach the gospel to yourself on a daily basis, to strengthen your faith, and to define what you believe and why. You will be amazed at the difference it can make in your life!

  1. Gospel According to Jesus by John MacArthur

What did Jesus mean when he said, "Follow me"? In this classic work, MacArthur warns against "easy believism" that has characterized some aspects of evangelical Christianity, explains his understanding of biblical faith and works, emphasizes the cost of discipleship, and reinforces his conviction that there's no eternal life without surrender to the lordship of Christ. In The Gospel According to Jesus challenges Christians to re-evaluate their commitment to Christ by examining their fruits. MacArthur asks, “What does it really mean to be saved?” He urges readers to understand that their conversion was more than a mere point in time, that, by definition, it includes a lifetime of obediently walking with Jesus as Lord.

This Scripture-based book contains one new chapter and is further revised to provide Christians in the 21st century a fresh perspective on the intrinsic relationship between faith and works, clearly revealing Why Jesus is both Savior and Lord to all who believe.
