This chart provides a fresh look on the work of Jesus Christ.  When properly observed it brings wonder and ignites praise in the hearts of the children of God.  In this world of self-obsession we are constantly looking for fresh ways to lift our eyes above the gloomy clouds of sin and selfishness.  There is no better way to do this than to drink deep of the gospel.  And that’s what this diagram is…it’s the gospel, the work of Jesus Christ.

God the Son left glory to become a man.  He entered into the womb of a virgin, He lived a perfect, sinless life and He died a horrific death.  He took on the sins of the world and bore the wrath of God.  But He did not stay dead, but rose from the dead as the first-fruits of eternal life, raised in a never dying resurrection body.  He then ascended to heaven to be seated at the right hand of God, the highest possible position of exaltation.  He will return so soon to judge the living and the dead. He will come for His people and He will set up eternal glory for all who trust and live for Him.

Oh the wonder of His willingness to humble Himself, to subject Himself to death and then the continued wonder of His exaltation, His future and complete reign.  He is so awesome, so glorious, so loving, so humble, so powerful, so majestic.  And He did all this for the glory of God and the love for you and me!!

       No wonder Paul exclaimed,

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!  How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways.” Rom. 11:33

Thank You Jesus…..thank You for the gift of life and the promises of glory!

I believe in God the Father, Almighty Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ,
      His only begotten Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
died and was buried. He descended into hell.
      The third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion
of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
      and life everlasting. Amen.

FriFridaySepSeptember17th2010 DESTROYING THE IDOLS OF MY HEART
byJon Miller Tagged Bible 1 comments Add comment
I’ve been thinking a lot this week about idolatry. God’s Word is very clear in both the Old
and New Testaments with prohibitions from idolatry. In Exodus 20:3-4 God tells us, “You
shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or
any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that in the earth beneath, or that is in
the water under the earth”. And in 1 Corinthians 10:7 we’re told to “flee from idolatry”.

The problem is that, if you’re anything like me, when you hear the word ‘idol’, your mind
goes one of two directions. You think either about a popular reality television show, or you
think about an image or figure from some indigenous tribe in another corner of the world.
And since I don’t watch that TV show, and since I live in southern Ontario, my tendency is to
start thinking that these verses don’t really apply to me. Or do they?

Tim Keller in his book Counterfeit Gods gives an interesting definition of what an idol
actually is. He writes, “[An idol] is anything more important to you than God, anything that
absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what
only God can give”. In light of that, it sounds like we can’t really skirt around the issue of
idolatry, can we? This truly is important to us here and now.

So what are the “idols” that might exist in your life and in mine? What are the things that
can quickly become more important to us that God, the things that absorb our hearts and
minds more than Him, the things we might seek to give us only that which God can provide?

Here are just a few off the top of my head…my children, my spouse, my job, fitness,
sports, money, technology (Smart Phones, television, social networking), sexual pleasure,
food, home improvement, the pursuit of position and power, seeking the approval
of others…I could go on and on. And let’s be honest, even our ministry to Christ can
quickly become an idol, when it starts to become more important than even God Himself.

So what do we do about all this then? How do we go about dealing with the idols of our
heart? Here are four steps to take:

      1. Believe that idols exist in your life. Perhaps you’re reading this and you still don’t believe
that the issue of idolatry applies to you. It does. Believe it. And if you don’t, pray and
ask God to give you the faith to believe that so you can take the next step….

      2. Ask God to reveal them to you. Maybe one of the things I mentioned stood out to you
in your own life. Or maybe there is something else that is functioning as an idol in
your life. Ask God to reveal that to you. I’m certain He’s going to answer that prayer!

      3. Repent and start destroying the idols in your life. Repentance is about change. It’s about
changing our minds and then changing our behaviour. So if technology has become an
idol to you, get rid of your television, or take a break from Facebook. If money functions
as a god, then start giving a lot more of it away to others. Destroy the idols in your life.

      4. Pray for a greater love for Jesus Christ. This is really the ONE THING that we’re talking
about this year, a passionate pursuit of an awesome God. So get on your knees and start
praying fervently that Jesus Christ would be your one consuming passion, the One who
absorbs your heart and mind above all else.

SunSundaySepSeptember12th2010 THE ONE THING Here are the 7 responses I closed the sermon with that will change your life so that you can start living for The One Thing!  These aren't new things at all, but that's the whole point. These are the old things that never get old!

Where do I start living this One Thing?

      1. EAT the WORD: As you feed on Gods' Word, as you consistently seek the Lord's heart, to hear Him and grow in Him, it will go from duty, to desire, to delight.

      2. PRAY for Life Change: God will not resist this prayer!

      3. DESTROY Your Idols: Ask the Lord to tell you the idols of your heart. Ask close ones to tell you the idols they see in your life. Then destroy and smash the idols!

      4. FOLLOW  Strong Examples: Who you follow is who you become. Follow Christ! Paul said, follow me as I follow Christ.

      5. UTILIZE Your Trials: One of God's greatest tools in transforming us is trial. Surrender and stop fighting what God is doing.

      6. SHARE the One Thing: Evangelize--share the gospel of Jesus Christ, the only thing that matters.

      7. PREPARE to Worship:
Take 1 hour before every time you come to church to prepare your heart. Ask God to change your life, your family, your heart. And show up on time. Show the Lord the One Thing you are living for, the One Thing you are after, that you value time gathering together with His people to worship Him. Believe that God will change your life!
